Alice Inn Wonderland
Alice in Wonderland, March 5
Director:Tim Burton
Stars:Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway
The story: Feeling out of place among the Victorian society types at her own engagement party, 19-year-old Alice (Wasikowska of TV’s In Treatment) runs away and finds herself tumbling down a rabbit hole — the same one she fell into as a child. On the other side, she reacquaints herself with Wonderland’s bizarre citizens, including the Mad Hatter (Depp), the Cheshire Cat (voice of Stephen Fry) and the Caterpillar (voice of Alan Rickman).
What’s new: “This is a classic coming-of-age tale,” says producer Richard Zanuck of the script by Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King). “In other versions, Alice is an onlooker walking through a freak show. These aren’t freaks. They are personable and understandable.” Adds fellow producer Joe Roth, “The story, by nature, is usually episodic. But Linda found an engine to drive it.” Even Alice’s passive persona has been recharged. “The Disney cartoon presents her as quite girlish and frilly and sort of uptight in a British way,” Zanuck adds. “But here she puts on armor to do battle.”
