Becoming online friends is simplicity itself. All it takes is a few clicks – one for the request, the second for the confirmation.Of course, not every online “friend” is a friend in the true sense. Yet, the possibility of forming true friendships online remains.”Friendship is always a two-sided long-term relationship,” says Horst Heidbrink, who researches friendship at the Fern-Universitaet in the German city of Hagen. Just adding new friends in a social network is not the real thing, he says – those friends lists are usually little more than electronic address books.”Instead of intensifying, the term ‘friend’ is seeing a dramatic shallowing,” says Heiko Ernst, chief editor of a German modern psychology magazine. Bits of information sent back and forth are the coin of this new friendship realm. Intimacy is difficult. After all, it’s impossible to be close with more than 50 friends.British psychologist Robin Dunbar has noted the same thing. A study he conducted showed that people cannot process more than 150 relationships at the same time. But online, quality is quickly replaced by quantity, noted US cultural critic William Deresiewicz in an essay titled Faux Friendship.

APPLE has emerged as a real threat to Google’s core business by making early inroads into the mobile advertising market.

Two months ago, Apple launched iAds.

Newly released figures show that already the advert-selling service for portable devices has collected $US60 million ($71m) of commitments for mobile adverts in the second half of 2010. Apple has secured deals with brands such as Unilever, General Electric and Citigroup.

This may be small change compared with Google’s annual revenues of about $US23.7bn, 99 per cent of which comes from online advertising, but analysts argue that the significance of Apple’s running start in the market should be underlined by the combination with its brand name and platforms, such as the iPhone and iPad.

Facebook is revamping user profile options to maximise connections between fans and their favourite bands, books and business pages.

Currently users can list their activities, interests, favorite music and TV shows as part of their profiles. But suggested links to Facebook pages relating to those interests appear in a separate section lower down on their page.

Beginning next week Facebook will start prompting users to essentially combine the two. So if a user listed Johnny Cash as a favourite artist, Facebook will now ask them to join Cash’s page, if they haven’t become a fan of it already.

Users will be able to hide this suggested connection on their profile, but this won’t stop their name being listed on their nominated favourites’, in this case, Johnny Cash’s page as one of the 1.2 million “people who like this” or “fans”. The same goes for users’ home towns, education and work places.

But there are more to Facebook pages than brands and bands.

People like pickles, they like sleeping in and 641,653 people even like the Norwegian Olympic curling team’s pants. So for such things, Facebook is rolling out community pages.

In many cases community pages will include Wikipedia entries on the topic, along with Facebook related posts from friends and strangers who haven’t restricted public access to their updates.

But for now, there is no option for users to interact with the cooking page, for example, by posting a message directly on its wall. Facebook said it will be asking people “who are passionate about any of these topics” to sign up as a contributor, though the company did not say when this would begin.

Facebook is also adding some privacy controls so that users’ friends can’t see the list of other friends they have. Under a new section called “friends, tags and connections” users will be able to limit who can see what on their profile. Facebook had taken this option away when it overhauled privacy settings in December, but users and privacy advocates have been asking for it to return.

Google Has Launched a New Service Called Google Buzz . Google Buzz is a new way to start conversations about the things you find interesting. It’s built right into Gmail, so you don’t have to peck out an entirely new set of friends from scratch — it just works. If you think about it, there’s always been a big social network underlying Gmail. Buzz brings this network to the surface by automatically setting you up to follow the people you email and chat with the most. We focused on building an easy-to-use sharing experience that richly integrates photos, videos and links, and makes it easy to share publicly or privately (so you don’t have to use different tools to share with different audiences). Plus, Buzz integrates tightly with your existing Gmail inbox, so you’re sure to see the stuff that matters most as it happens in real time.

On the phone, Google Buzz is much more than just a small screen version of the desktop experience. Mobile devices add an important component to sharing: location. Posts tagged with geographical information have an extra dimension of context — the answer to the question “where were you when you shared this?” can communicate so much. And when viewed in aggregate, the posts about a particular location can paint an extremely rich picture of that place. Check out the Mobile Blog for more info about all of the ways to use Buzz on your phone, from a new mobile web app to a Buzz layer in Google Maps for mobile.

In order to build Buzz (you can connect Flickr and Twitter from Buzz in Gmail), and Buzz itself is not designed to be a closed system.

Now follow us on Google Buzz too!!!

On Friday Timothy Creamer, an Astronaut on board the International Space Station (I.S.S.), send the first live tweet from space. It was one small tweet for man, one giant tweet for mankind.

Mr. Creamer, whose Twitter name is Astro_TJ, wrote: “Hello Twitterverse!
Tweeting from space is no easy task. In an interview last year with Mark Harris of CNET, the I.S.S.’s IT staff explained the logistics and hardware involved in connecting to the Internet 250 miles above the earth, while traveling at 17,300 mph.

According to the IT staff, the space station is equipped with 68 IBM ThinkPad A31 laptops and 32 Lenovo ThinkPad T61p devices. The laptops are all connected via Wi-Fi access points, and “there’s also a dedicated IP phone for phone calls and some limited video-conferencing abilities if astronauts need to see their families.”

The Internet connection is also relatively speedy. The Astronauts have connections speeds as high as 3Mbps up and 10Mbps down, which is comparable to most home DSL connections.
