Corruption is rampant in many countries today. No work is possible without chai paani (bribe). Everyone must have experienced this ubiquitous nuisance. KHATTA MEETHA, a remake of the 1989 Malayalam drama film, VELLANAKALUDE NADU (which was again directed by Priyadarshan) is a satire on this perpetual menace. While it was a novel issue back then, it’s been done copious times over the years.

Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar) is a struggling road construction contractor in a small town who has taken loans practically from the entire village. But he still manages to wear sunglasses! Trigun Fatak (Manoj Joshi), Sachin’s brother-in-law, is a corrupt chief engineer who works in the municipality. Suhas Vichare (Milind Gunaji) is a road contractor married to Sachin’s second sister. Anjali (Urvashi Sharma) is Sachin’s college-going sister.

While Sachin struggles through his never-ending woes, things go haywire. A bridge collapses because of bad construction, taking many innocent lives. Figun, Suhas and others who were involved in the construction, conveniently pass the buck to Vishwas Rao (Tinu Anand), who is a driver of the Tichkule family and later kill him. Azad Bhagat (Makrand Despande), who has lost his wife and son in the bridge mishap, is determined to bring to justice the criminals behind the scam.

The common man’s troubles remain the central plot of the film. As if Sachin’s miseries weren’t enough, the new municipal commissioner turns out to be his ex girlfriend Gehna Ganpule (Trisha) who now loathes him.

The successful director-actor jodi of Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar (HERA PHERI, BHOOL BHULAIYAA, DE DANA DAN) fails to entertain this time. Priyadarshan falls short to render the issue of corruption, which Rajkumar Hirani did effectively in portions of LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI. It has the right intent but offers nothing which we haven’t seen. The screenplay gets monotonous with Sachin Tichkule constantly borrowing money, his numerous tiffs with Gehna, perverted acts of Rangeela (Rajpal Yadav) and random songs.

With an excruciating long running time of 2.40 hours, the film drags. Music by Pritam except for the song Nana Chi Taang, is very poor according to his standards. Only V Manikanandan’s choreography is neat.

Akshay Kumar’s comic timing is impeccable but he is very loud. Trisha, who makes her Hindi film debut, is passable. She looks too young to be a municipal commissioner! Urvashi Sharma is decent. Johny Lever, who is seen after a very long time, is uproarious. Wish we could see more of him. Rajpal Yadav gives a superlative performance. Makrand Despande is effective in his small role. Manoj Joshi is impressive while Kulbhushan Kharbanda is good.

The verdict
No dont go ! please dont waste your money! Please, Inception is running in the next (Now that’s a life saving advice)

Rating – 1.5/5

Despite being battered by the global economic crisis, New York took the top spot, with Melbourne, Australia, coming in second. Tokyo was ranked third and Madrid and London rounded off the top five.

RUNN AWAY!! That is all I can say to somebody who’s planning to go watch RGV’s latest flick: Rann. It seems he has tried to do a Madhur Bhandarkar with it, but failed miserably. Even the presence of Amitabh Bachhan has not been able to lift the standard of the movie.

I have so many questions that I would like to ask RGV: what is Rajpal Yadav doing in the movie? (when you set out to make an intense movie, you don’t put in Rajpal Yadav for comic relief). What is the role of Nitu Chandra?(except for showing her cleavage and legs that is). And this is the best: Why does Purab(Riteish D) always wear a pullover-shirt combination to his office?(there’s certainly no dress-code). But what I’d like to ask him most is, what was he thinking when he made this movie!!

The movie starts pretty good, the opening sequence has a horror-movie-like feel and is quite slick. But it seems RGV has tried to keep that same feel throughout the movie. With the camera mostly, if not always, hidden behind something or the other, people going in and out of focus and profusion of dark shadows; after a while, you feel like you are watching a sting operation of some kind. Too many characters is also a problem RGV has not been able to handle. Amitabh B, Paresh Rawal, Rajat Kapoor, Reteish D, Gul Panag, Nitu Chandra, Rajpal Yadav…the list goes on (and I’m not even counting a lot many character artists). In an attempt to juggle so many characters, RGV has not been able to do justice to anybody. Riteish D spends most of his time doing detective work on his motorbike. Amitabh B seems more like a preacher than the head of a large media channel; his son (played by somebody who’s a decent enough actor) is obsessed with his cigarette lighter (again RGV’s obsession with making his actors play with small objects, as if showing how a person swirls a drink in his glass is the sole object of making a movie) and nitu chandra doesn’t have clothes to wear, so she spends most of her time in nighties only…wait!! there’s someone who looks like Rajat Kapoor too, but he spends most of his time calling up people and acting as a message delivery boy.

The editing seems slack, the music ok, the dialogues monologueish and a bit too clisht (hindi for “pure/bookish/heavy”), the characters try too hard and end up being too “filmy”. The talents of Mr. Bachhan and Paresh Rawal have been completely wasted, though Riteish has done pretty well. The story is pretty good; a twist of the conventional corrupt politician-ethical hero theme, the actors are very good. Given to any other director (I would not like to speculate who), editor-cinematographer team and a little revamping of dialogues could have turn it into a riveting drama.

My Rating: 2/5 (that too because of some good sequences by Riteish and Paresh Rawal)

RUNN AWAY!!!

This week go watch Veer only if you are a braveheart. Get ready to face the dead! Take a look at what we thought of this week’s new releases.
We didn’t walk in with much expectations but perhaps we should have had none at all! Salman Khan in orange and red dhotis, poor music, no story and a chubby version of Katrina Kaif…. That’s Veer for you. The film is about the Pindhari clan who battle the British to avenge their dishonour and get their land back. The scale and sets of the movie may impress you at first but slowly and very steadily everything else in the movie falls flat on its face. Anil Sharma’s direction is as loose as Salman Khans script and their combination spells disaster on screen. Salman’s performance is intense but his dialogue screaming will get to you eventually. His new lady love on screen lives up to the Katrina Kaif look alike promise and that’s about it! Watch Veer only if you are a braveheart.
